Pain Associates of Charleston Offers New Botox Injection for Tension Headaches
Charleston, SC -- The physicians of Pain Associates of Charleston are the first in the Charleston tri-county area to perform a new procedure to treat tension headaches and myofascial pain syndrome, using botulinum neurotoxin B – also known as Myobloc™. Although botulinum neurotoxins have been used for over ten years and are popularly remembered as early “face lifts”, today the benefits of these toxins reach far beyond cosmetic.
Botulinum toxin A - more commonly known as Botox™- is a protein structure derived from the same family of bacteria that causes tetanus, an often fatal disease. This chemical causes temporary muscle paralysis by blocking transmission of nerve impulses and is currently used to treat an array of maladies including crossed eyes and juvenile cerebral palsy, tension headaches, and myofacial pain.
Myobloc injections are generally used when other standard treatments fail and are prescribed as a third line treatment or therapy. The solution is injected directly into the affected area. Results are typically seen within a week, with relief lasting three months or more. Pain Associates of Charleston offers this treatment to patients at both St. Francis Hospital, and in their new state-of-the-art outpatient block suite in the Mount Pleasant Neuroscience Building at 1341 Old Georgetown Road.
